Optimising your Google Business Profile

Practical ways to improve a Google Business Profile, from categories and services to posts, photos and enquiry handling.

A profile that lists accurate details, current photographs and a clear description does more for enquiries than any amount of ranking work on the website. Optimisation is the ongoing habit of keeping that profile correct, useful and current. Most listings are left exactly as they were created two years ago, which is why a careful review often produces visible improvements.

Review what competitors show

Look at three or four businesses in your area that customers would compare you with. Note what their descriptions say, how many reviews they have and how recent, how many photographs, and whether they list specific services or a vague summary. This is not copying; it is calibration. If every competitor lists a specific service name and yours says quality service work, you have found a gap that costs you enquiries. Be careful to stay truthful about what is genuinely yours to claim.

Keep the description and services in step

Your description should be rewritten when your offer changes, not left from the day the profile was created. Describe what you do now, in the words customers use, and remove anything you no longer offer because it attracts the wrong enquiries. Keep it readable rather than dense, since customers read it on a phone. If your services are seasonal, mention the season rather than implying you are available for everything all year.

Fix the basics first

Confirm the business name, address, phone, website link, hours and category are correct and consistent with the website. Check that the phone number actually works when tapped on a mobile device and reaches someone who can answer. Make sure the description states what you do, who you serve and which areas you cover, using the words customers would use rather than internal jargon.

Choose categories deliberately

Your primary category is the strongest signal about which searches your profile can appear for. Pick the most specific one that fits, then add secondary categories for genuinely separate services. Avoid the common mistake of choosing a broad category to appear for more searches, because the listing then gets shown to people expecting something else. Review your category choice whenever you add a significant new service.

Build out services and products

List each real service with a short description that a customer would recognise. If you have different tiers or packages, name them plainly. This information feeds both search matching and the questions customers ask before calling. Vague entries such as best quality service do nothing; specific ones such as same-day AC servicing in Kothrud give a customer a reason to choose you.

Keep photographs current

Add real photographs regularly: the outside of your premises with signage visible, the inside, your team at work, completed jobs, and equipment. Show work in progress as well as finished results. Label photos with the service they relate to. Authentic images of your own business are more useful than stock photographs, and they help customers recognise the place before they visit.

Handle enquiries as part of optimisation

Respond to calls, messages and direction requests promptly, especially outside your stated hours. Turn on messaging if you can staff it, and check that messages reach an inbox somebody reads. Many local enquiries happen outside business hours, and a profile that ignores evening messages quietly loses work to a competitor who answers. Set a simple rule: someone checks the profile at least twice a day, including on weekends during your season.

Decide what is worth outsourcing

Some tasks need an agency and some are better kept in-house. A one-off cleanup of categories, services, naming and photographs is worth paying for if you do not have the time or the knowledge. Replying to reviews, adding a photograph after each job, and keeping hours accurate are cheaper handled by the person who did the work. A sensible arrangement uses the agency for judgement calls and the team for routine upkeep, and it should be written down so both sides know who does what.

Post and engage

Updates, offers and short posts give you a reason to add fresh information and keep the profile active. Use them to announce new work, seasonal services such as monsoon servicing or Diwali offers, or helpful tips. Do not post the same content repeatedly or use posts as an excuse for keyword text. Quality and relevance matter more than volume.

Common questions

How often should a profile be updated?

Reviews should be handled as they arrive, and something should be added to the profile every few weeks, such as a photo or an update. Businesses that add fresh, accurate information regularly appear more useful than those left untouched for a year. The point is not frequency for its own sake but showing that the listing reflects a real, operating business.

Does adding keywords to the business name help?

It can, in the sense that a clear, readable name is easier for customers to recognise and search for. Appending service words in an unnatural way is not recommended and can create confusion, because the name should match how the business is known and what appears on documents. Describe services properly in the services and description fields instead.

Can optimisation guarantee a better map position?

No. Completeness, accurate information, genuine reviews and regular updates all help a business be a better candidate for local results, but map positions depend on distance, competition and the specific query. No provider can honestly promise a rank or a lead figure. What optimisation does reliably deliver is a profile that converts better and is easier for customers to trust.
